Lady Trojans put up back-to-back big innings in win

The Dyersburg softball team got its week off to a successful start on Monday evening at Doug French Field, turning a 1-1 game into a big lead for the Lady Trojans on the way to a 9-3 win over Gibson County.

With the game tied at 1-1 apiece after a Lady Pioneer run in the top of the third, Dyersburg got its lead back quickly. Chelby Jordan drew a leadoff walk by fouling off a pair of two-strike pitches after getting down 0-2. Lilly Kate Jones followed with a double to score her senior teammate and put Dyersburg back on top. Izzie Odom tripled to score Jones then crossed the plate herself on a Kyleigh Littles single to put Dyersburg on top 4-1 after three innings.


The Lady Trojans added more to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Mallory McCaslin led off with a double then was joined on the basepaths two batters later when Jordan reached on an error. Jones singled in a run then Odom plated another run with a base hit. Littles tacked on a run with a sacrifice fly before Murphy Morgan singled in a run to put Dyersburg on top 8-1 following four frames.

Dyersburg picked up another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Jordan drew another leadoff walk then scored on an Odom groundout to extend the Lady Trojan lead to 9-1 heading into the seventh inning.

Gibson County was able to cut into the Dyersburg lead in the top of the seventh with a two-out, two-run RBI single from Owens before the Lady Trojans closed out the inning to secure the win.

Odom picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.

Odom had a triple and a single with three RBI to lead the way for Dyersburg at the plate. Jones, Littles and McCaslin each had a single and a double for the Lady Trojans.

Dyersburg returns to action on Tuesday when the Lady Trojans travel to Medina for District 13-3A action against South Gibson at 5:30 p.m.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball. DAC Director Patrick Holden, talked about how this agreement came about. “Tyler Baker with Grand Slam Baseball reached out to me about wanting to bring some travel baseball tournaments this fall to Dyersburg,” Holden recalled. “We have always been pretty much softball only, rec softball and travel ball. “So, that’s when I reached out to Kyle Hinson, president of the Diamond Youth Baseball Organization.” Holden explained that when he learned most of these travel baseball tournaments are two-day events, he reached out to the local DYB league for help and a chance to benefit both organi...
