Choctaw softball punches ticket to district championship game

The Dyer County softball team advanced to the District 13-3A Championship Game coming up on Monday night with a 6-3 win over Crockett County on Saturday afternoon on the Lady Cavaliers home field in Alamo.

After a scoreless first inning, the Choctaws got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles to lead off the inning from Emma Wray and Evie Rogers looked in danger of being wasted as the Lady Cavaliers retired the next two batters. Junior Natalie Armstrong came through in the clutch as she singled to score both runners and give Dyer County a 2-0 lead after an inning and a half.


Crockett County answered in the bottom of the third with a Leforgee sacrifice fly to cut the Dyer County lead to 2-1 after three innings.

The Choctaws answered in the top of the fourth. Rogers singled then scored on a Kate Benedetto double to center. Benedetto then scored on a Rylee White groundout to give Dyer County a 4-1 lead after three and a half frames.

Dyer County extended its lead in the top of the fifth after walks from Katie Beth Caldwell and Allie Ables. Caldwell scored later in the inning on a Wray groundout to put the Choctaws on top 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

The Lady Cavaliers looked poised to get back into the game after loading the bases with no one out in the bottom of the sixth. But, Crockett County was limited to a pair of sacrifice flies in the frame to only trim the Dyer County lead to 5-3 after six full innings.

The Choctaws picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a White RBI single to extend the 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Dyer County then retired the Lady Cavaliers in order in the bottom of the seventh to punch the Choctaws ticket to the District 13-3A Championship Game on Monday night at 7 p.m.

Ava Hart picked up the win in the circle, allowing three runs on seven its with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Key picked up the two-inning save.

Benedetto led the way for Dyer County at the plate with a single and a double and one RBI while Rogers had a pair of singles in the win.

Dyer County awaits the winner of the consolation bracket final which will see Crockett County take on South Gibson at 5 p.m. on Monday night in Alamo. The Choctaws will face the winner of that game in the district championship game at 7 p.m. Either South Gibson or Crockett County will have to defeat Dyer County twice while the Choctaws only have to win once to take the district championship.
