Choctaws advance to region championship game

After falling behind early to Chester County in the semifinals of the Region 7-3A Tournament on Friday evening in Henderson, the Choctaws scored five unanswered runs on the way to a 5-2 win on the Eagles home field.

The win earned Dyer County a spot in Saturday’s Region 7-3A Championship Game at Henderson against Crockett County at noon.

Chester County got on the board first with runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead after three innings.

In the top of the fourth inning, Dyer County finally broke through. The Choctaws were held hitless through the first three innings before Carson Nevels one-out single in the top of the fourth broke up Chester County’s no-hit bit. The singles then began to come as Seth Headtake followed with a base hit before an Easton Ozment single tied the game at 2-2 before the Eagles got out of the frame with a pair of outs.

Dyer County pulled out in front in the top of the following inning. A one-out walk by Landon Daniels was followed by an RBI double from Talon Messer to give the Choctaws the lead. Jake Stanley doubled in another run to put the orange and white on top 4-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

After retiring six of the next eight batters, the Choctaws added a run on a Weston Sims sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh for insurance to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the frame.

Dyer County then retired the Eagles in order to punch their ticket to Saturday’s title game.

Stanley picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Bennett Black pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.

Headtke had a pair of singles to lead the Choctaws at the plate.

Dyer County will look to break this season’s three-game skid against the Cavaliers, which would allow them to advance to the TSSAA Class 3A Sectional Series. A loss would send the Choctaws to the consolation bracket final later on Saturday.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
