Dyer County dominance clinches District 13-3A title

For once, Dyer County did it the easy way, capping off a District 13-3A Championship with a 10-0 win over Crockett County on Monday night in Alamo, completing a three-game sweep of the competition.

The Choctaws got on the board early after getting out of a small jam in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Rylee Key singled then Allie Ables reached on an error. Emma Wray doubled in both to put Dyer County on top 2-0 after an inning.

Dyer County pitcher Ava Hart and the Choctaw defense allowed just a two-out single before getting out of the top of the second with the shutout still intact.


The Choctaw offense rewarded them in the bottom of the second with two more runs. Again with two outs, Natalie Armstrong drew a walk then Kierstyn Ray singled and Katie Beth Caldwell walked to load the bases. Key came up big again with a two-run single to double the Dyer County lead at 4-0 after two frames.

After allowing base runners in the previous two frames, Hart and the Dyer County defense got through the top of the third 1-2-3 to send the game to the bottom of the third.


The Choctaws again put runs on the board with a crooked number. Wray walked to lead off the frame then Evie Rogers singled. Kate Benedetto grounded out but moved up the runners. Rylee White had her moment as the junior doubled in a run. Armstrong continued to produce, singling in a run. With the lineup turned back over to the top, Ray singled in two more runs. The offense continued to churn out hits and runs as Caldwell doubled in a run then Key singled in one more to extend the Dyer County lead to 10-0 after three innings.

From there, the Choctaw defense allowed only a one-out walk in the fifth as the Lady Choctaws claimed the District 13-3A Championship.

Hart had a stellar performance in the circle, earning the Tournament Most Valuable Player honors behind a two-hit shutout over five innings.

Key had a trio of singles and three RBI while Armstrong and Ray had a pair of singles in the win.

The Choctaws will face McNairy Central next Monday in the Region 7-3A Semifinals with a time to be determined at Dyer County High School.
