Crockett County crushes Choctaws in region battle

Dyer County dropped its second straight game and fell to 0-2 in Region 7-4A play as the Choctaws fell behind early to the Cavaliers, who scored 33 straight points on the way to a 40-7 victory over the orange and white on Friday night in Newbern.

The Cavaliers scored on a Ben Burgess run in the first quarter then on a Demarious Pickens interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Cavaliers then tacked on a late touchdown with a pass from Burgess to Phillips for 26 yards before ending the half with a six-yard touchdown run by the quarterback to take a commanding 26-0 lead at the half.

Crockett County continued to put points on the board in the second half, getting a 19-yard Burgess run early in the third quarter to extend the Cavalier lead to 33-0 and put the mercy rule briefly into play.


Dyer County was able to get on the board early in the fourth quarter as Korey Taylor capped off a Choctaw scoring drive with a two-yard run with 8:32 left in the game. The extra point cut the Crockett County lead to 33-7.

Crockett County tacked on one last touchdown with 5:13 left on a Thomas 34-yard run. The extra point pushed the Cavalier lead to 40-7.

Dyer County was held to just 90 yards on the ground (Taylor leading with 82 yards on 18 carries and the lone touchdown for the Choctaws) while only 100 yards through the air. Choctaw Landon White was 4-of-7 for 58 yards and two interceptions.

On the other side of the ball, Crockett County amassed 228 yards on 33 carries on the ground while also throwing for 100 yards in the win.

The Choctaws will hit the road on Friday, Sept. 18 when Dyer County will look to right the ship when the travel to Jackson to take on North Side at 7 p.m.
