Dyer County cruises to sweep over South Gibson

The Dyer County volleyball team opened its week with a three-set win over visiting South Gibson, dominating the Lady Hornets to complete the home-and-home season series with the volleyballers from Medina on Tuesday in Newbern.

The Choctaws fought off the Lady Hornets during the first set as that was the closest set score of the day. Dyer County put a damper on the South Gibson hopes earlier, turning an 8-6 lead into a 14-6 advantage thanks to a 6-0 run by the Choctaws. Down the stretch, Dyer County outscored South Gibson 10-1 to take the first set 25-9.

An early ace from Molly Davis set the tone for the second set as the Choctaws scored three straight to open the frame. An Evie Rogers ace later in the frame made it a 10-3 lead for Dyer County. Davis, Kierstyn Ray and Kate Benedetto added aces down the stretch on the way to a 25-8 win in set two.

With Davis on the line and earning another ace, the Choctaws took a 6-0 lead to start the third set and never looked back. Ray and Benedetto also added an ace apiece on the way to the Choctaws’ 25-6 win in the third set.

Dyer County returns to action on Thursday when the Choctaws host Milan at 6 p.m. in another District 13AA match.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
