Dyer County drops region opener at Hardin County

Despite rallying with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to erase a 10-point deficit heading into the final minutes, Dyer County (2-1, 0-1) dropped its Region 7-4A opener on Friday night in Savannah when Hardin County had the last rally of the evening to take a 31-24 win over the Choctaws.

The orange and white headed into the fourth quarter down 24-14 but a 47-yard touchdown pass from Landon White to KeAnthony Barbee got the Choctaws on the board. The extra point cut the Tiger lead to 24-21 with 8:53 left in the game.

Dyer County was able to get the ball back quickly and, almost as quickly, turned that effort into points. Korey Taylor capped off a quick drive with a five-yard touchdown run to give the Choctaws their first lead of the night with 8:17 left in the game. The point after put the orange and white on top 28-24 early in the fourth quarter.

Hardin County, though, got the final laugh as the Tigers put together a game-winning drive late in the game, scoring on a four-yard pass from Aiden Coleman to Heath Hardin with 42 seconds left. The extra point gave the Tigers a three-point lead they were able to protect to seal the win.

Dyer County answered a first-quarter Hardin County touchdown early in the second frame to tie the game. White hit Grant West for a 66-yard pass with 11:24 left in the first half. The extra point tied the game at 7-7.

After giving up a touchdown, the Choctaws answered with a three-yard run from Taylor to cut the deficit to one. The extra point tied the game at 14-14 with 2:48 left in the half.

Hardin County was able to get a 26-yard field goal as the clock ran out at the half to take a 17-14 halftime lead.

Taylor led the way on the ground with nine carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns. West was the leading receiver with three catches for 110 yards and a score.

Through the air, White was 10-of-15, throwing for 204 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

The Choctaws will return home on Friday, Sept. 11 when Dyer County hosts Crockett County in another Region 7-4A tilt beginning at 7 p.m.
